Urban informal trade sector is constantly being expelled, evicted, or relocated from public space as they are conceived for creating disorder. This dissertation investigates the complexity of informal economic practices which unsettles urban policies that are determined to relocate vending practices into official markets. This dissertation argues that there is an affinity between vending practices and the space where they operate. Thus, public spaces are often conceptualized as a livelihood space. This affinity is enabled partly through extralegal arrangements with local actors, often address as preman, who hold a certain degree of unofficial authority within a locality. These arrangements may contribute to the conceptualization of another form of urban citizenship, one that does not contests against but navigates within the power structure.
